Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Stanford/Cal OVER 54
Times are changing and neither Cal nor Stanford are under teams anymore. They profile much more as OVER teams, especially here down the stretch. And with this total of 54 below the key number of 55, I think there's plenty of value to pull the trigger on the OVER.
Stanford is coming off a 38-35 shootout win over Louisville that saw 73 combined points. That followed up a 59-28 shootout loss to NC State and 87 combined points. Stanford and its opponents have combined for at least 50 points in eight of its 10 games this season.
The Cardinal have one of the worst defenses in program history. They rank 119th in scoring defense allowing 34.6 points per game and 120th allowing 6.5 yards per play. But their offense has a pretty good dual-threat QB in Ashton Daniels, who threw for 298 yards and 3 TD to lead the upset over Louisville last week. He has rushed for 515 yards and two scores this season.
While Stanford ranks in the middle of the pack in tempo at 68th snapping the ball every 26.4 seconds, California has changed philosophy this season to go more up-tempo under Justin Wilcox. The Bears rank 34th in tempo snapping the ball every 24.8 seconds. Wilcox has transformed from a defensive-minded head coach and has freed up his offense this season.
The Bears are 5-1 OVER in their last six games overall. That includes 77 combined points with Miami, 82 combined points with Wake Forest and 58 combined points with Syracuse. California should be able to name its number against this awful Stanford defense, and the Cardinal are going to be forced to try and keep up in a shootout again this week.
